Do's   &   Don'ts   for   Lash   virgins...

Rachel has been working in the industry for over 15 years as a hair stylist, makeup artist, and beauty consultant in New York and Arizona. She's constantly learning, trend-hunting, and shopping -- all with access to beauty products not available to the public. And she's here to share the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Up today: Eyelash Extensions!

I was turned onto lash extensions to enhance my natural eye and fell in love. It took a little while to get used to the care and maintenance, but after that, I was totally addicted. I am not into the whole "cake my makeup on" deal, so having the lashes means I don't have too much to do in the morning to get ready except add a little lipgloss and maybe some bronzer.

We have all gone to those chop shops for our nails, and probably had an 'Angela Johnson' experience at one time or another, but having a crooked nail is not as traumatic as possibly having all of your eyelashes bonded together! Eyelash extensions can be flirty, fun and super sexy... but having the wrong technician can really mess up the whole "eyes are the window to your soul" thing, especially if you are giving the "I have spiders hanging from my eyes, please take them off!" look.

Choose   Pr3tty   Lashes !

Don't: Get them wet or go into a steamy room for the first 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully bond and dry.

Do: Use a blow dryer on a very low cool setting and blow-dry your lashes upwards if you do get them wet.

Don't: Use an oil-based makeup remover. (The oil will break down and dissolve the adhesive causing the lashes to fall off.)

Do: Use oil-free makeup, removing wipes to remove eye makeup.

Don't: Pull out an outgrown lash! Trying to pull the extension off can cause your natural lash to come out resulting gaps/spaces.

Do: Use a clean mascara wand to brush (inital brush is supplied at your first appt for free) your lashes upward, and let the natural lash cycle shed, as it normally would every four to six weeks.

Don't: Let your lash specialist use "cluster lashes" (a knot of lashes, usually performed at nail salons), because they can place a lot of stress on your natural lash and resemble clumpy mascara. Plus, most of those inexpensive options use hair glue as an adhesive and these can result in natural lash or eye damage.

Do: Let your lash specialist bond one individual lash extensions to one of your own natural lashes. This will give you the most natural look and help to maintain the integrity of your own lashes.

Don't: Go to just any lash salon!

Do: Get a recommendation and make sure they are certified, like Pr3tty Lashes. Most likely you will know someone who has their lashes done, and if you couldn't tell your friends had them, that's a good thing!

I provide an eyelash extensions guide post service, as well as educate you on care of your lashes... I can answer almost all the basic questions you might be having about eye lash extensions.

Eyelash extensions are the best way of having longer, fuller and natural looking eyelashes. However, they need to be taken good care of.

Eyelash extensions has helped people who did not like fake eyelash strips or the struggle of putting on fake eyelashes everyday to have long, luscious, fuller and better looking eyelashes.

The exact or recommended fill duration varies, I recommend coming for an eyelash fill after 2-3 weeks just to replace those, which have fallen off naturally in the case of an eyelash that has grown old and fallen, and a new one has grown or the adhesive bond has been weakened.

Generally, how long eyelash extensions last is dependent on your lifestyle and after care. Things like weathers (extreme coldness, heat or humidity), the amount of makeup you wear, your cleansing habits, number of times you swim and so on will affect duration. Let me, your Lash technician, advice you after how long you can you go for a refill after elaborating to me on your lifestyle.

I hope this answers your concern on how long these extensions will last.

Advantages   of   Eyelash   Extensions –

Pros   and   Benefits

When you compare lash extensions to fake eyelashes, they have a number of advantages. You need to start enjoying these benefits too. Some of these pros, which have seen an increase in demand for eye lash extension, include the following:

  1. They require no regular maintenance once you have them as compared to other types of eyelash makeup, which will require you to apply them daily. You need only to follow the eye lash extensions after care that I provide to you. This makes them ideal for busy moms, girls who love to not have to spend time applying eye makeup, brides, for special events, etc.
  2. The second benefit of eye lash extensions is that you do not need to use mascara or curl your eyelashes if they are well done and they are ideal for ladies who cannot wear mascara for one or the other reason.
  3. No more streaking or running of mascara, especially if you do not use a good waterproof mascara, which runs and streaks less
  4. They are weightless and they look very natural.
  5. They can be used by people who wear contact lenses and you can conduct your day as usual i.e. go swimming, to saunas, shower, working out or whatever without falling off.
  6. Finally, on their benefit, they last for a long time. You would need to refill them after 2-4 weeks if you maintain them well. They can indeed last longer if you take good care of them.

Eyelash   Extensions

After   Care

After you have had your lashes applied you want your eyelash extensions to last for long. These after care steps and procedures you should adhere to... This will further give you answers to how long do they last.

Please read the important after care guidelines that I recommend you follow.

  1. Avoid wetting your eyelashes for 24 hours after going for eye lash extensions.
  2. Do not go for saunas (body steaming) for at least two days as well as avoid hot shower streams hitting your eyes.
  3. Avoid wearing mascara, avoid eyelash curlers as well as rubbing your eyes too much.
  4. If you have to use mascara, use the product I recommend, then apply it on your tips and not the base of your eyelashes and avoid waterproof mascaras.
  5. Avoid using any oil based makeup remover, oil near lash lids.
  6. Reduced frequent visits for saunas, hot springs or steam rooms since heat could weaken your eyelash extensions adhesive bonds.
  7. Go for touch up after every 2-3 weeks, depending on your eyelash growth cycle. If it is shorter, you need to go sooner and vice versa.
  8. Do not pull on them, as this will weaken them or even remove the whole eyelash (including your natural eyelash).
  9. Another important after care tip is ensuring you maintain normal eye hygiene. It is normal to fall into the temptation of not wanting to clean your eye area since you do not want to wet your eyelashes. Using a small micro fiber Q-tip is recommended.

The above eyelash extensions after care guidelines are very important if you want to have your eye lash extensions last longer. However, if you ignore the above eye lash extensions after care guidelines, nothing bad will happen, except for the fact that your eyelash extensions will not last long, or if you pull them/persnally try to remove you may have lash damage.

Lash   Extension   Removal

You went for lash extensions, but you no longer need them.. what do you do? Can you remove them on your own using an oil based eye makeup remover? Please understand that this process is not as easy as in the case of removing fake or false eyelash strips.

  1. If you want to remove eyelash extensions, it is highly recommended you go for an expert. There is the temptation of trying to remove eyelashes extensions on your own. This might turn futile if you do not follow the correct procedure as high-grade surgical glues, which can withstand sweating, water or soap, are normally used bond them. If you try to remove them on your own, you risk damaging your natural eyelashes. This is why you need to ensure you remove eyelash extension properly by a professional. I understand there are many suggestions on the internet on how to remove eylash extensions at home or home removal remedies, among many others. My advice is coming to me, a certified technician that can ensure you observe the following precautions:

  2. Do not try to forcefully remove or pluck your eyelashes. This can cause breakage or removal of your natural lashes. In fact, this is one of the reasons, why you should not remove them on your own.
  3. Avoid rubbing your eyelashes so much in attempt to remove them using the various recommended home eyelashes extension removal remedies.
  4. In case you have pinpricking pain, which could be due, some of your eyelashes sticking together during the process of applying them; go to a professional to help you separate them.

PREPARING   FOR  YOUR   LASH   APPOINTMENT  AND MAINTAINING   EYELASH   EXTENSIONS  :

The application process is very relaxing – like receiving a spa service. Shower before you arrive. Please plan on not showering for 24 hours after application. I use a custom quick application technique developed exclusively through my professional training. You lie down on a plush massage table and have your eyes closed the entire time. Your technician will glue lash extensions to one of your natural lashes with medical grade glue. No clusters, flare lashes, or anything else that will cause damage to your natural eyelashes will be used. When your natural lash sheds, the extension will fall out with that lash. To maintain a full appearance, it is recommended to get a refill about every 2-3 weeks. Your initial full set takes around 2 hours and refills can be done in as little as 90 minutes. I love children; however there is just nothing for them to do while here. Please plan on finding someone to watch your little ones at home so that both you and other clients can come in and relax and be beautified! I am a Registered Nurse, Licensed Cosmetologist, Certified Lash Stylist, Wax Specialist, Certified Permanent Eyebrow Microblading Artist and Blood Bourne Pathogen Certified. I am not responsible for broken, lost or stolen items.  We all know as women we have lots of stuff... Please keep everything in your purse or leave it at home so things do not get left behind.

WHAT   TYPE   OF

ADHESIVE   IS   USED?

I am a skilled technician and only use medical-grade adhesive to apply semi-permanent eyelash extensions. It is all latex and formaldehyde-free. It has been specially formulated to work on sensitive areas of the body, such as the eye, to reduce skin irritation. I use a synthetic polyester blend in the lash extensions. It is a cruelty-free product and prevents allergic reactions and problems for women with sensitive eyes and skin. Any reaction is a rare occurrence, and may possibly be from the result of incorrect eyelash extension application from a non certified lash stylsit, a seasonal allergen or improper at-home care.
